Anahid Sofian is a renowned dance artist and pioneer of Middle Eastern dance in the U.S., known for bringing the art form from nightclubs to prestigious concert stages like Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, and the Delacorte Theatre. With a foundation in ballet, modern, jazz, and Afro-Cuban dance, she brings a uniquely versatile perspective to her choreography and teaching. Self-trained in Middle Eastern dance through deep immersion in cultural communities, Anahid has developed a signature style blending authenticity with innovation. She is also of Armenian descent and has presented research on Armenian women’s dance at major institutions. A recipient of grants from NYSCA and CAPS, she has created works fusing ballet and Oriental dance and has taught at universities including NYU and Hunter College. Since 1972, she has directed her own New York City studio, offering classes, workshops, and intensives that shape dancers from beginner to professional levels.
