WHAT: Led by Kaeshi Chai and Jeri Lynn Astra, this 8 week performance course will focus on the magic, wisdom and power of the Crone, Fairy Godmother and Witch archetypes to generate and shape a group dance using structured improvisation, Lecoq, Dell’Arte, Laban, Playback theatre, ensemble directing and Jake Knapp’s Sprint Design process. By establishing a place for fun experimentation and dialogue, participants will spend 8 weeks working in a positive and open environment that fosters creativity and artistic connection. This will culminate in a show to the public. Appropriate for dancers of all levels.

WHO:

Kaeshi Chai is a world-fusion bellydancer and teacher trainer who co-founded the professional dance company and school, Bellyqueen, and also PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment), a global community of artists focused on empowerment and social change through dance and music. Kaeshi has performed and taught extensively internationally, and is an alumni member of the Bellydance Superstars, Jillina’s Bellydance Evolution and Kenji William’s Bella Gaia. One of her all time joys is dancing to live music. In addition to her years on stages from Las Vegas and beyond, from 2007-2017 she curated the weekly Djam Under Jebon event for dancers and musicians to create and play together in the East Village of NYC. She teaches at the Bellyqueen School of Dance, leads creative labs using Sprint methodology to create full length theatrical dance shows in 3-4 days and curates an annual PURE Conference. Her mission is to develop bellydance as a stage art and explore its powerful, healing properties.

Jeri Lynn Astra earned her BA in Dance Pedagogy from Point Park University and is a lifelong dancer who has danced principal and soloist roles with Carnegie Performing Arts Center and Pittsburgh Savoyards, choreographed and performed with Rising Sphinx Arts Collective, participated in Rodney Lopez’s salsa performance teams, competed nationally in Lindyhop and Balboa, and has had the honor of participating in the Myra Krien’s Dance Residency in San Miguel de Allende and the Havana Habibi residency in Cuba. She was the resident dance instructor for NYC’s longest running monthly jazz age event, Club Wit’s End, and was a guest instructor for Brooklyn Swings, as well as a member of The Big Apple Lindyhoppers and The Brooklyn Bombshell Revue. She is a 3rd Degree student at the Academy of Pagan Studies, where she is training to become a High Priestess and certified religious counselor in the state of NY. She is on the leadership team for Open Love NY, as well as the founder of Jersey City Polyamory & Alt Relationship Network, co-founder of Deconstructing Polyamory, founder of CKS Love & Life Journeys, and co-founder of RetroStyle Pin-up Club, and she models with Pin-ups for Mental Health Awareness as well as serving as Jersey City Fashion Week’s Face of Fashion 2018.
