Drumming 101 w/ Rami El Aasser

WHAT: This 5 week Drumming 101 course with Rami Tabla will cover basic hits and sounds on the drum of many names (doumbek, darbuka, tabla). Develop your Middle Eastern drum technique from the ground up.
Learn about posture, breath, how to hold the drum, developing great sound on the basic hits Doum, Tek, and Ka, and the language of drumming and music through the technology of Zoom. We will also talk about the cultural context and cover important foundation Middle Eastern rhythms.

Rami ‘Tabla’ El-Aasser has a MS from NYU (2010) and BS from Northwestern University (1997). He plays darbuka and sings worldwide with groups including Alsarah & the Nubatones, Raquy Düm, and Zikrayat. Based in New York & the Berkshires, he is a regular at NYC’s taraab and dance parties with traditional musicians from across the mideast. With roots in Egypt, his repertoire includes classical and folk traditions from the Arab World, Greece, Balkans, Turkey, East and North Africa, by way of Brooklyn.
