About the Teachers:
Specializing in raks sharki (belly dance), Alura has trained in many dance genres, including, Samba, Salsa, West African African, Haitian, and Jazz. Alura has served as Artistic Director of the Columbia University Bellydance Troupe, while simultaneously earning her Masters in Socio-cultural Anthropology at Columbia. She was also one of the original members of the Dalia Carella Dance Collective and PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment), a collaborative fusion dance project with Kaeshi Chai. With over 17 year of experience, she is an advocate for the art of Middle Eastern and North African dances.
Rachel Furr made her belly dance debut before she was even born, when her mother danced while she was pregnant with her! She grew up around belly dance, but did not formally start her training until 2007, at Maya’s Belly Dancing in Montgomery, AL. What began as a chance to bond with her mother turned into her own passion. In July 2011, she started taking classes at Bellyqueen and she was invited to join the Fire Blossoms student troupe in October 2012. In November 2014, she attended Bellyqueen’s Teacher Training. She also teaches twice a month at the Mariners Harbor Branch of the New York Public Library.
