Cost: 5 Week Courses $85 for non-members, $70 for members (Bellyqueen unlimited pass holders)
No drop-ins. You must sign up for and commit to 5 consecutive weeks in advance. If you don’t show up, you will lose a credit. (Please note that you can also enroll in this course with 5 or 10 class card credits. This must be done manually by Bellyqueen staff.)
ABOUT THE TEACHERS:
Maki Moves is a dancer and performing artist who relocated to New York city in 2012 from Nagoya, Japan. She has a background in hip hop, Cuban Salsa, Reggaeton, Egyptian belly dance and Tribal Fusion. She is one of the principal dancers and instructors of Sahara Layla from the Hermes Dance Company and has trained in the Bellyqueen style since 2005. Maki Moves has performed in NYC, Japan, Australia and Thailand and has taken respected Teacher Training programs led by Tamalyn Dallal and Bellyqueen. She was a competition winner with Bellydance Evolution in Sydney, Australia and was selected as the very first belly dance choreographer to be showcased at the prestigious 2014 7th Annual Choreographer’s Canvas in NYC. www.makimoves.com
Specializing in raks sharki (belly dance), Alura has trained in many dance genres, including, Samba, Salsa, West African African, Haitian, and Jazz. Alura has served as Artistic Director of the Columbia University Bellydance Troupe, while simultaneously earning her Masters in Socio-cultural Anthropology at Columbia. She was also one of the original members of the Dalia Carella Dance Collective and PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment), a collaborative fusion dance project with Kaeshi Chai. With over 17 year of experience, she is an advocate for the art of Middle Eastern and North African dances. Alura completed the Bellyqueen Teacher Training in March 2014.
Gabriela Figueroa’s journey with belly dance began 7 years ago as a self-taught dancer. She began her formal instruction with Natalie el Ghoul; a contemporary dancer and choreographer at La Fábrica in Guayaquil, Ecuador. At La Fabrica Gabriela discovered her passion for Middle Eastern dance and continued her studies in Quito, Ecuador at Frente de Danza Independiente with Carolina Cruz, a professional dancer and certified somatic teacher where she learned how to view movements from the inside. Gabriela teaches belly dance regularly in the New Jersey area focusing her class on creating community and integrating body and mind through dance.
In 2015 Gabriela became a member of Natalia Nazario’s Raks Al Zahra troupe. In 2018, Gabriela took the Bellyqueen Teacher Training Course led by Kaeshi Chai. She continues to grow and improve each day by regularly studying with many renowned teachers.
