WHAT: The DJAM NYC event is back for one night only! Kaeshi Chai has gathered together an international group of dancers many whom are flying in from other places. They are looking forward to sharing their talents with the NYC community. This variety show will also include one or two work-in-progress numbers from Kaeshi’s brand new theatrical show “Red Ocean Blue Ocean”.

Angél Kaba is an Afro Hip-Hop dancer and choreographer from Brussels (Belgium). Daughter of a Martinican mother and a Congolese father, she defines herself as a multidisciplinary artist and a lover of mixed arts and cultures in general. She begins her artistic career with ballet at the age of 6 which she pursued for over 13 years. She also studied solfeggio, music and theatre at the Music Academy of Brussels. In 2006, she worked on her first musical “Elya’s dream” with her performance company, Contre-Tendance. Her goal is to train future artists and to create opportunities for expression on stage.
Kaeshi Chai is a world-fusion bellydancer and teacher trainer who co-founded the professional dance company Bellyqueen and PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment), an international community of artists who create positive change through dance and music. Kaeshi has performed and taught internationally, and is an alumni member of the Bellydance Superstars, and Jillina’s Bellydance Evolution. She curates the weekly Djam NYC event showcasing dancers and musicians, and teaches at the Bellyqueen School of Dance and Steps on Broadway. Karen Madrid began her lifelong journey in dance at age 4 training in jazz, contemporary, gymnastics and Mexican dance. Her teachers include Sahara Lahoud from Lebanon and Osvaldo Brandan with whom she completed a certification in Arabic culture and rhythms. In 2006, she started her own school “The Bellydance Institute” in the city of Juarez, Mexico, and in 2007 she moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2010-2014 Karen was selected to perform in Bellydance Evolution, where she had the opportunity to travel throughout Asia and her native Mexico.
As a bellydance instructor and choreographer, Karen continues to seek knowledge to enrich her dance skills by staying up to date on all current trends and generously imparts this knowledge to her students. Karen currently teaches in Guadajalara, Mexico and performs professionally around the world capturing the hearts of audiences with her dynamic, vivacious and fun style.
Laura Ward is a Canadian born contemporary ballet dancer and choreographer who founded Octavia Cup Dance Theatre in 1998. Laura’s work has been shown at many venues including the 92nd St Y with New Choreographer’s On Pointe, Merce Cunningham Studios, Williamsburg Art Nexus, Byrdcliffe Theatre in Woodstock. In 2007 Octavia Cup performed original works in Avignon, France and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as on the Delacorte Theater stage in Central Park (in a Tribute to Marc Bolan). Octavia Cup has performed at the New York City Ballet’s Annual Wellness Weekend. Laura has choreographed for NYC’s Earth Celebrations Festival and danced with Classics Dance Theatre, Yass Hakushima Mime Theater and Roots of Brazil. Laura is a Laban Movement Analyst and teaches for Dance New Amsterdam, Equinox and the Laban/Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies.
Yael Becker is a dancer, choreographer, actor and belly dance teacher with a BA from the Tel-Aviv University in Psychology and Multi-Disciplinary Art. She studied performance and visual arts all her life and have been immersed in belly dance over the past 20 years. Yael has participated, produced and created dozens of shows on prestigious stages and teaches and performs locally and internationally.
Yael is an innovative choreographer and performer and is committed to creating fresh, original pieces that take traditonal belly dance out of the box to reinvent it’s framework fusing in techniques from dance and theater. Yael is a part of the stand up comedy dance group “Push Up” that performs regularly around Israel. She also founded “Salon Habibti” in 2012, a project that allows artistic belly dance projects to have a stage.
